About this site

HELP Debt Calculator is a free, independent tool for estimating Australian HELP (HECS-HELP) compulsory repayments, indexation and pay-off dates. It is published by an individual, non-professional publisher and has no link with the Australian Taxation Office, the Department of Education or any university.

Where the figures come from

Every threshold, rate and formula comes from a primary source, listed at the bottom of each page with the date shown on that source: the ATO’s tax rates and codes pages, ATO Schedule 8 for withholding, studyassist.gov.au (Department of Education), and the Higher Education Support Act 2003 on the Federal Register of Legislation. The calculation code is tested against the worked examples published by the ATO. Where an official page contradicts itself, the page says so and explains which figure is used (see the 10% threshold for 2026–27).

All rules were last checked on 29 September 2026.

Update schedule

• Before 1 June: the new indexation rate, once the ATO publishes it.
• Around 1 July: the new repayment thresholds and the new Schedule 8 withholding coefficients.
• After any federal Budget or law change affecting HELP debts.
